David L Smith
I’m a retired art teacher from Siren, K-12. I miss being around children of all ages. As I like to say, “they make you old and keep you young at the same time.” Now I have more time to be a kid and find out who I am.
I call my work ‘found object sculpture’, finding objects, mostly from the past, and re-purposing them into a new environment.
My work seems to be a number of things – surrealism, abstraction, folk art and outsider art – making due with what’s in front of me and making connections between objects. They are like storytellings that become visual journal entries of my life.
My favorite artists are Georgia O’Keefe, Diego Rivera, Martin Purior and David Smith (the real one, not me!).
My work is inspired by places I’ve been, refugees, relationships, adoption, letters and numbers, dementia, age and children.
